Wake-up Call
Eating breakfast may tame your appetite and help keep your blood fats in
check. Breakfast eaters consume fewer calories throughout the day and have
better blood lipid profiles and insulin sensitivity than breakfast skippers, a
recent study concludes. Low-fat yogurt with fruit, granola with skim milk, or
whole-grain toast with peanut butter are all great choices to start your day.
Real Age Protein for the Pancreas If you make a conscious effort to minimize
your intake of processed meats, your pancreas will thank you. In a recent study,
people who ate the most processed meats, such as hot dogs, bacon, cold cuts, and
sausage, had as much as a 67 percent increase in their risk of pancreatic
cancer. Protein choices such as fish, poultry, and eggs were not associated with
an increased risk of the disease.

New Product Nature’s Sea Calcium (Stock # 1577-5)
A new option from the ocean: Nature’s Sea Calcium is derived from
Lithothamnium, a hard, brittle red algae that grows off the southwestern coast
of Ireland. In these pure, mineral-rich waters, Lithothamnium congregates to
form large beds of stone-like algae. The seaweed’s mineralized matrices
naturally contain high concentrations of naturally occurring, plant-sourced
calcium along with up to 70 other minerals, including magnesium, boron, copper
and zinc. Lithothamium provides a renewable source as the plan is left
undisturbed. Better Absorption: Nature’s Sea Calcium naturally promotes bone
health and density. And its high buffering capacity makes it ideal for
supporting and maintaining normal range pH levels. Nature’s Sea Calcium has a
large surface area and a porous structure, which may increase its
bio-availability. This formula contains a proprietary blend of short-chain
fructo-oligosaccharides, which, when converted to short-chain fatty acids by
beneficial flora in the body, have been shown to improve calcium absorption.
Available in both powder and capsules.
Scientist’s Corner
Regular exercise and a healthy diet with adequate calcium helps the following
groups reduce their risk or osteoporosis:
- Teen and young adult white and Asian women in their bone forming years.
- Menopausal women
- Persons with a family history of osteoporosis
- Elderly men and women
THE DIABETES EPIDEMIC
On the Brink of a Diabetes Disaster Why are we hearing more and more about
type II diabetes?
- Because it’s happening more than ever--800,000 new cases will be
diagnosed this year.
- It’s costly--more than $132 billion was spent on treatment in 2003.
- Victims are younger--cases in people under 39 have jumped 70% since
1990.
- Cases are more serious--it’s the seventh leading killer in the U. S.
Fast Facts On Type II Diabetes
- The pancreas may produce insulin, but it is insufficient, or the body no
longer knows how to use it (insulin resistance).
- Approximately 95% of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have the type II
variety.
- Type II can be as life threatening as type I, leading to blindness,
amputation, organ failure, and early death.
- Nearly six million people with full-blown type II diabetes don’t even
know they have it yet and may be permanently damaging their health. Up to 20
million people likely have “prediabetes,” which will explode into type II
condition if they don’t get treatment.
- For every two pounds of weight increase in the U. S., diabetes
prevalence went up 9%.
- Type II diabetes is 90% preventable with diet, exercise, and a healthy
life-style. Herbal supplementation is key to this prevention.
Signs You May Have Diabetes
- Increased/frequent urination
- Dehydration
- Excessive intake of water and/or food
- Weight Loss despite increase appetite
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly after eating
- Weakness or excessive fatigue
- Absence of menstruation in women
- Blurred or poor vision
- Increase susceptibility to infection and/or poor wound healing
- Impotence in men
We’re Overwhelmed by Too Much Sugar An acidic diet (high sugar, meat, soda
pop) causes calcium to go from the bones to the pancreas. This not only triggers
osteoporosis, but also jams up the pancreas, which produces less insulin as a
result. The Journal of American Medicine
Let’s start with just how much we’re eating. Consider that more than 100
years ago, the average adult consumed 18 pounds of sugar per year. Today,
average sugar consumption in the United States is a staggering 176 lbs per
person. This is 1000% more sugar than 100 years ago! So you reduce sugar? Not
quite. That’s because sugar is only one source of simple carbohydrates. If you
reduce sugar intake but continue to eat white bread, rice, and pasta in large
amounts, those carbohydrate-dense foods will mimic straight sugar, quickly
convert to blood sugar, and exacerbate a diabetic condition. So what do you eat?
Well the comforting news is that there are plenty of good foods that help keep
diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar at bay, including fresh, whole fruits and
vegetables and lean meats. In addition, focus on: Fiber: Fiber reduce your
body’s need for insulin. It also acts as a natural sponge, suspending food
particles and controlling the release of sugar into your blood. You need 35 +
grams of fiber a day. Most people only get 13 grams. Amino acids and Enzymes:
Amino acids provide the raw material for the body’s production of insulin, and
enzymes aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. In short, amino acids
and enzyme supplements, will help that “good” food do its work ! Nutrient
supplements: Some of the most important nutrients is also the most overlooked
despite being so easy to consume. As a physician, I believe that every diabetic
(or prediabetic) patient needs a basic supplementation regiment. If you’re not
doing this already, promise yourself to start today. Listed at the end of this
article are some great “diabetes-fighting” supplement ideas. Although what you
eat may make you sick, it can also make you well. Once you have your diet under
control, you’ve made a pivotal step in preventing or reversing diabetes.
Supplementation Can Help Fight, Even Prevent, Diabetes
Diabetes-Fighter # 1: Chromium (with Glucose Tolerance Factor)
Consider chromium your body’s personal assistant. It’s a vital trace mineral
that encourages “glucose tolerance factor” production , or GTF carries glucose
out of the blood and into the cell--overcoming insulin resistance, the leading
cause of diabetes. Add a chromium supplement to your diet, and it will assist
your body in a most healthful chain reaction: chromium stimulates GTF production
in your intestines, the GTF helps glucose metabolism and reception by body
cells, and this keeps blood sugar levels on the level.. Chromium GTF (Stock #
1801-6)
Diabetes-Fighter # 2: Carbohydrate Reduction Combination Here’s how it
works: the carbohydrate reduction combination is a non-stimulant amylase
inhibitor composed of purified white kidney beans. This substance has been
proven to naturally, safely prevent the body’s absorption of starches--meaning
you metabolize fewer calories and sugar from starch stays out of your
bloodstream. Carbo Grabbers (Stock # 2954-6)
Diabetes-Fighter # 3: Pancreas Support Combination You can revitalize
and support this all important organ with pancreas support combination that
includes the following 14 complementary herbs: golden seal, juniper berries,
garlic, white oak bark, mullein leaves, slippery elm bark, marshmallow root and
yarrow flowers, licorice, capsicum, cedar berries, dandelion and nettle.
Pro-Pancreas (Stock # 1022-2)
Diabetes-Fighter # 4: Blood Sugar Combination Regulate your glucose
with a quality blood sugar combination that includes these natural ingredients:
gymnema, fungreek, bittermelon, nopal, banaba, bilberry, chromium and vanadium.
SugarReg (Stock # 927-1)
Diabetes-Fighter # 5: Noni Because Noni is such a great inflammation
fighter, it is recommended to everyone, but particularly those at risk for
diabetes or other inflammatory diseases. Nature’s Noni (Stock #4042-7)
